Two Reasons Why Mikel Isn’t Generally Recognised As A Chelsea Legend By Fans

About 24 hours ago, Chelsea ‘legend’ John Obi Mikel announced his retirement from professional football aged 35.The Nigerian midfielder who spent more than a decade at the London club was a part of a very successful era where he won 11 major trophies in the blue colours of Chelsea.

After his announcement yesterday, there was a debate amongst fans as regards whether Mikel is a Chelsea legend or not.

The Chelsea football club website described him a legend in an article announcing his retirement but many fans have disagreed with that qualification.

For a player who spent over a decade at the club, made 374 appearances, won the English Premier league twice, the English FA Cup four times, the League Cup three times, and the Community Shield, Europa League and Uefa Champions League once, Mikel is truly a Chelsea legend in every sense of the word.

So why is their always a debate about his legendary status?

In my opinion, there are two reasons why Mike isn’t generally recognised as a legend of Chelsea by fans.

1) He was very underrated player during his prime

As a Chelsea player, Mikel was very underrated. He was a proper defensive midfielder who shields the defence expertly, was very great on the ball, fearless in possession, had a wide range of passing, was a good tackler, and someone who couldn’t be dispossessed off the ball.

He was the complete package but sadly, he did not get his flowers in that era so many people have completely forgotten just how good he was as a player for Chelsea.

2) The word ‘legend’ is subjective

Secondly, there is no definitive quality or achievement that qualifies a player to be a legend. Fans have different reasons as to why they classify a player as being a legend or not.

So in Mikel’s case, the number of people who don’t consider him a legend as the people who don’t think he ticked all the boxes of being a legend to them.

As someone who has watched Mikel from the very first day he signed for Chelsea FC till the day he left the club, I can confidently say that the Nigerian is a true Legend of Chelsea football club
