Tuchel provides Chelsea injury update on Trevoh Chalobah, Andreas Christensen and Timo Werner

The Blues have a number of injury problems in their backline ahead of facing Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that Trevoh Chalobah is out of Chelsea’s clash against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final, but Timo Werner could feature.

Chalobah left the pitch against Liverpool on Sunday after 70 minutes with a hamstring issue. understands the 22-year-old came into the fixture as a doubt with the issue but ultimately decided to take the risk.

Werner was absent from the squad for the match against Jurgen Klopp’s side but has continued his recovery from COVID-19 and was present in training ahead of the weekend and again on Monday.

Andreas Christensen was also absent against Liverpool after he required to be substituted at half time against Brighton due to his ongoing back injury.

The Denmark international has received an injection over the Christmas period but his struggles have continued.

The German coach said: “Andreas is a doubt for tomorrow, Trevoh is out for tomorrow because of his re-injury and Timo Werner trained yesterday.

“We have one more training to go, he feels much better which is a good thing. He did full training, full intensity and no reaction so far. If the training is going well we can have him on the bench or give him some minutes.”

Ruben Loftus-Cheek also appeared to return to training on Monday following his own COVID-19 situation combined with recovery from an ankle injury. Ahead of the game against Liverpool Tuchel noted the academy graduate was close but had not returned to team training at that stage.

Romelu Lukaku is also in contention for the game after his talks with Tuchel on Monday saw him return to the Blues squad.
