The 4 Most Expensive Club Sales In Football..
Football clubs have grown by leaps and bounds in the last few decades. The focus of the club no longer remains solely on the fans in the stadium but also on those sitting at home or in pubs, viewing their favourite team’s matches via television.
This particular paradigm shift has helped teams massively grow their ardent fan bases to the point where the club’s value has multiplied several folds.
Several billionaires have become investors in the last two decades, and the trend may continue this year. Chelsea already changed hands earlier this year, when Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich sold the club to American billionaire Todd Boehly.
Liverpool and Manchester United, both English giants seeking new investment from the market, could soon follow suit. United’s current owners, the Glazer family, have stated in a club statement that selling the club entirely remains a viable option.
Here are the four most expensive club sales in football, according to Sportskeeda.
1. Chelsea Football Club:
Buyers: Clearlake & Todd Boehly
Price: £4.25 billion
Last season, Chelsea supporters went through a lot of emotional turmoil. Chelsea fans have seen it all this year, from the club winning the Club World Cup in January to the departure of their beloved owner Roman Abramovich and Champions League-winning manager Thomas Tuchel.
Due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Russian oligarch faced intense government pressure in the United Kingdom earlier this year to sell the club. Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, Chelsea’s new owners, paid a hefty £4.25 billion for the club.
2. AC Milan:
Buyers: RedBird Capital Partners
Price: £1.07 billion
In June 2022, RedBird Capital Partners purchased AC Milan from Elliott Management Corporation. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on Italian football, with AC Milan among the clubs that had to exchange ownership.
3. Manchester United:
Buyers: The Glazers
Price: £800 million
Manchester United was purchased by the Glazer family in 2005. Until this year, it was the most expensive purchase for a football club.
Manchester United, as a sports organisation, is on par with Real Madrid in terms of brand recognition. The club enjoyed fantastic on-field success during its early years under American ownership, thanks to legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. But ever since he left the game, neither the trophies nor the reputation of football have improved.
Buyer: Stan Kroenke
Price: £600 million
In 2011, American business tycoon Stan Kroenke purchased a specific percentage of Arsenal’s stock. He continued to buy out other stakes over the years, and by 2018, he had complete control of the north London club.
Arsenal has been one of the market’s lowest spenders over the last decade when compared to other major clubs. As a result, they underperformed on the field, with several star players leaving in their prime for more lucrative opportunities.
Since the end of 2018, the vision appears to have shifted slightly as the club attempts to increase their spending power while also streamlining their resources towards a single-vision project led by Edu and Mikel Arteta.
