Opinion: Chelsea could regret it if Jorginho leaves the club when the transfer window opens.

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has come under intense criticism in recent times, moreso as he nears the final few months of his contract. Many fans are desperate to see the holding midfielder leave as they feel his time is up at the Bridge. Then again, there is the issue of his age, considering he will be 31 by December 2022. And of course, Chelsea are known for not handing big contracts to players in their age bracket. All this points to the fact that Jorginho may be forced to leave any moment from now, especially when the transfer market opens, despite his agent, Joao Santos, still insisting that Jorginho wants to stay at the club.

In any case, Chelsea may come to regret allowing Jorginho to leave the club, either during the January transfer window or on a free transfer at the end of the season. Jorginho may look like an average player and may seem to have dropped form lately, but the reverse is always the case with him, especially at Chelsea. Have you ever wondered why, every summer, a lot of people always think Jorginho’s time is up, yet he stays on? In fact, he’s been relevant to every manager that has taken over at Chelsea, even till date. Certainly, it’s not for nothing that all the coaches still prefer him in that holding midfield position. He brings stability to the defense and not many players in the world can do that.

Again, it’s Jorginho’s positional awareness that has given room for Reece James and Ben Chilwell to thrive as right wing back and left wing back, respectively. By the way, he provides proper cover whenever the two wing backs move forward. If he leaves, there are chances that James and Chilwell could miss the mark and it could affect Chelsea more.

Chelsea are yet to find a better replacement for Jorginho, having tried Saul Niguez, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Gallagher, and so on to no avail. That means that, for the time being, there is no better defensive cover than Jorginho provides for Chelsea, and allowing him to leave without a proper backup could cause the team more problems and even regrets.

Do not forget that it was Jorginho’s brilliance in the midfield that gave Chelsea the ridgidity and structure they needed to challenge for the UCL in 2020–21, which they eventually won. Last season, we all saw how Chelsea underperformed when he was struck with injury, along with Kante, and we know how it all ended for Chelsea. Should Jorginho be allowed to leave without a proper replacement, I fear for Chelsea because they may lose their defensive structure, something they may later regret.
