Chelsea are close to selecting Christopher Vivell as the new technical director to lead the club’s transfer policy in the future.
The Blues spent more money on players over the summer than any other club in a single transfer window, but this has not led to success on the pitch.
Chelsea have already sacked manager Thomas Tuchel this season and sit in a modest fifth place in the Premier League table, eight points behind leaders Arsenal, despite having played one game less.
Vivell, who was sacked from RB Leipzig on Friday over “opposing views” on the club’s ownership, is expected to bring more structure to their transfer plans, having previously overseen the Red Bull club. Among the players he helped discover was Erling Haaland, although the Norwegian star has gone to Red Bull Salzburg.
So which players could he sign immediately?
Christopher Nkunku – RB Leipzig
According to reports, Nkunku is effectively a done deal with Chelsea, and the Blues have agreed to pay more than a fee waiver for the striker to secure his signature. His versatility and goalscoring ability would be an asset to Graham Potter’s team and Vivell’s influence could play a major role in getting this deal done.
Josko Gvardiol – RB Leipzig
Chelsea are known to be looking for another central defender and have already been linked with 20-year-old Croatian international Josko Gvardiol. He fits the profile of a player the Blues have been looking for for a long time, and Vivell’s influence could be instrumental in securing a move for the coveted young man.
Benjamin Sesko – Red Bull Salzburg
Sesko has attracted attention over the past 12 months with his stunning performances for Red Bull Salzburg and Slovenia, but RB Leipzig have already agreed a deal to sign the 19-year-old sensation next summer. Vivell, of course, intervened. But there are also reports that the Bundesliga club could flip the striker immediately and get three times more than they agreed to pay for him. Chelsea and Manchester United are said to be interested.
Nicolas Seiwald – Red Bull Salzburg
Chelsea’s interest in another young player from Red Bull Salzburg, 21-year-old Austrian midfielder Nicolas Seiwald, is an indication of what their transfer policy will look like in the coming years. Seiwald is a player who has made great strides after getting his chance in the first team at Salzburg and if he continues on this path he could be spectacular.
Luan Candido – Red Bull Bragantino
Can Red Bull Bragantino make his first big sale to a European club since taking over the soft drinks company two years ago? It looks like left-back Luan Candido will do just that. The 21-year-old has long been the subject of a lot of transfer interest. Chelsea would have an advantage in this race if they appoint a man who knows him well.
