Meet The Goalie Who Have Been Awarded Red Cards In Previous World Cup Tournaments

In previous FIFA World Cup competitions, it was very difficult to see Goal keepers sent off in games due to their positions and contributions in the game of football. However, there have been couple of scenes when the Game Referees were left with no options than to expel the Goalkeepers after infringing on the rules of the game.

Italy’s Gianluca Pegliuca is the first Goalie to be sent off in a FIFA World Cup Match at the USA ’94, in a game between Italy and Norway. The Goalie ran out of the Penalty Area onto the field, only for him to punch Norway’s Oyuind leonharsden and handle the Ball outside his territory which is also a violation of the rule of the game. He was sent off and replaced by Luca Marchengiani after coach Arrigo Sacchi substituted Super Star Roberto Baggio. Even with a man down, Dino Baggio’s goal in the 69th minute secured victory for Italy. Italy only lost to Brazil in the Final Game through penalty kicks.

Itumeleng khune is the second Red carded Goalie in the FIFA World Cup. The South African was sent off after hitting Uruguay’s Luis Suarez in the penalty area, at South Africa 2010. The Host were shocked by Referee Massimo Busacca’s decision after the incident. Diego Forlan gladly converted the penalty to give Uruguay a 2-0 lead after the goalie was replaced by Moeneeb Joseph. The game ended 0-3 in Uruguay’s favour.

The latest Red Card is the 3rd of its kind shown to Wayne Hennessey in the 86th minute of Play in Wale’s world cup game against Iran at Qatar 2022. The Welsh Goalie applied a Kung Fu style to recklessly tackle Mehdi Teremi of Iran in a goal scoring opportunity moment. Hennessey’s unsporting behaviour earned him a Red Card which also destroyed Wale’s plans as 2 goals were scored against Wales, after the Goalie left the scene.

Red cards in World Cup to Goal keepers are not rampant but inevitable especially when the tempo and tension of the game rises in crucial games. Do you think there could be more Red cards in Qatar 2022? Share your thoughts and follow for more stories
