Graham Potter thinks Reece James can follow in the footsteps of John Terry and Frank Lampard at Chelsea and become a “legend.”
James, an England international, scored one goal and provided an assist in Chelsea’s 3-0 Champions League triumph over AC Milan on Wednesday.
Chelsea scored goals from Wesley Fofana and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to win their first match in Europe this year.
Potter, who took over as head coach at Stamford Bridge in place of Thomas Tuchel last month, says he “loves” working with James and that the player has “beyond the sky” potential.
The 22-year-old alumnus of the Chelsea school has already made 132 appearances for the club, won the Champions League at Stamford Bridge, and advanced to four Wembley finals.
Potter praised Reece after Chelsea’s convincing victory over Italian powerhouse AC Milan. “I think Reece is just a fantastic player, and he’s a young player, so he’s developing all the time,” Potter said.
“As time passes, he’ll get better and better. He’s got a lot to contribute and is excellent, so working with him has been a true pleasure.
“He’s incredible; he could play any game in the world. It’s my responsibility to assist him in realizing his potential because it is limitless.
“We cherish him. He is extremely crucial to us. His potential is to become a Chelsea icon, and it is my role to assist him realize that promise.
“That is the capability and degree he possesses. He needs to be a member of a productive team for that to happen. That is the goal we are pursuing.
Chelsea lost their first Champions League match under Thomas Tuchel, but they have won their previous two matches under Potter.
In Potter’s debut game as Chelsea’s manager in the Premier League, the Blues also overcame Crystal Palace 2-1.
It was not an easy game, according to Aubameyang, who scored his second goal for Chelsea after joining from Barcelona on the deadline day for transfers. In the first half, they performed well. The intensity was then kept quite high. We felt assured.
“I can tell that I’m having fun here. I’m in good spirits. I received a warm greeting from the staff and players.
“The opening goal was quite significant. It empowered us to play the game with strength and assurance. Against Milan, we were aware of what to do. They also have excellent strikers. The defense played outstandingly today.
Wining games makes it simpler. Right now, everyone is in a great mood. We’ll do our best to continue
