Chelsea’s players that can be ‘affected’ if Chelsea sealed the transfer of Frenkie de Jong

Chelsea’s players that can be ‘affected’ if Chelsea sealed the transfer of Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong, a star player for Barcelona, may be thinking about his future after a rough start to the season. Chelsea may try to sign him again in January. Even though adding him to Graham Potter’s team would make sense. But in the process, these four people may lose out.

N’Golo Kante

The Frenchman’s contract situation changed this month when it became clear that he would be out until well after the New Year because of a hamstring injury. With only 175 minutes of football under his belt, hits have already kept him from getting out of first gear.

When you add in the fact that Kante is one of Chelsea’s highest-paid players and that his current contract runs out in a few months, the Blues have less reason to sign him to a new deal. The 31-year-case old’s would be hurt if they signed De Jong, who can play a similar role in midfield.

Jorginho is another midfielder who is getting old and whose contract is about to run out. Chelsea seems to be bringing in younger players to strengthen their team, which could mean the end for Jorginho. Since he joined the team from Napoli in 2018, the Italian international has been a regular, but he will be free to go next summer.

Carney Chukwuemeka and Conor Gallagher are already after him at 30 years old, and adding De Jong to the mix would only make it harder for him to get a new deal. There are rumors, though, that Jorginho would still like to go back to Serie A next summer, so that may not matter in the long run.

Denis Zakaria

When the Blues’ attempt to sign De Jong in the summer fell through, former manager Thomas Tuchel turned to Swiss international Zakaria on the last day of the season. Since then, the deal has been nothing but bad, and the Juventus player hasn’t played a single minute under Potter.

His 6ft 3in height makes him a good fit for the holding role, where De Jong has shown himself to be an elite-level player for Ajax, Barcelona, and the Netherlands

So, if the crazy January plan works, Zakaria’s chances of making his loan move permanent or even getting some playing time this season would take a big hit.

Conor Gallagher

De Jong is best at making short passes from the middle of the field, but he can also move forward and do more daring things. That doesn’t look good for Gallagher, who is a boxing and MMA star whose Chelsea career is just getting started.

The 22-year-old has been good since coming back from his loan at Crystal Palace, but he won’t want to be held back by a big-name signing in January.
