Chelsea fans have been hit with another set of shocking news regarding Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku, who has been under heavy criticism over his recent interview with Sky Italy. The Belgium international made some controversial comments, that have since been the topic of discussion in the football arena, over his frustrations with the current Chelsea system and manager Thomas Tuchel. The matter had since been resolved with the striker issuing a formal apology to the club and fans after a meeting with Tuchel, and being allowed back into the squad.

However, the Chelsea hierarchy has left fans confused after slapping the 28-year-old with a €500,000 fine in a rather unexpected move. This is because the board had earlier on made it clear that they would be backing Tuchel’s position on the matter and had not given any indicators of punishing the striker.

The move comes barely hours after former Arsenal star, now-turned pundit, Paul Merson equated how Tuchel handled the matter to chopping off one’s nose to spite the face. Merson had criticized the Blues manager for dropping the striker in Chelsea’s’biggest match of the season’ against Liverpool at the Stamford Bridge, adding that Romelu had had it ‘far too easy’.

Do you think the decision by the Chelsea board to fine Lukaku the highest amount allowed in the Premier League is justified? With him likely to play today against Tottenham, what effect will that have on the striker?
