Celebration at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea bid for Star Player accepted by Derby for defender Dylan Williams

Chelsea are closing in on their first signing of the January transfer window in the form of a young left-back from Derby County

Thomas Tuchel is eager to bring in a new left-back to Chelsea, that is certainly no secret.

With Ben Chilwell rupturing his cruciate ligament against Juventus, Marcos Alonso has been left as the Blues’ only first-team option in the area.

A host of names have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this month. Lucas Digne, Layvin Kurzawa, Sergino Dest and even their very own Emerson Palmieri, but no deal has been pushed over the line.

But on Friday a new left-back was all but secured; although Derby County’s Dylan Williams is unlikely to be the solution sought after.

At just 18 years old, Williams is set to join Chelsea’s academy, where they also have plenty of issues at left-back.

With Derby currently under the control of administrators, they are required to sell any assets at their disposal in order to balance the books.

However, Wayne Rooney insisted that the decision to sell Williams was a personal one, and not one that was taken by administrators.

But how they secured him will not matter to Chelsea. The main factor is that a long-term wing-back solution may well have been secured.

Who is Dylan Williams?

According to Derby’s official website, Williams is cast from the same mould as Reece James and Chilwell, being described as ‘a versatile and explosive player’.

He only joined the Rams in the summer of 2020 and was thrust into the first-team for an FA Cup clash with Chorley after a Covid-19 outbreak ruled out nearly the entire squad.

It has also been reported that, throughout his time in the Derby under-23’s, he has played in five different positions.

While Williams is yet to establish himself in Rooney’s starting XI, this season has brought about six first-team appearances in the Championship, most recently starring on the left of midfield in a 1-0 win over Blackpool.

So while Williams is not likely to be a useful cog in Tuchel’s first-team machine just yet, he appears to have all the attributes to slot in seamlessly in time
