We’re just days into the international break and already there seems to have been plenty happening on the Chelsea front.
Thomas Tuchel has given the stars not called up to their national teams the week off, but they’ve appeared just as busy as their teammates with international commitments.
Tuchel will just be hoping that his squad can come through the period unscathed before they return to Cobham to prepare for the trip to Leicester City.
With the World Cup qualifiers on the verge of getting under way, we take a look to see what Chelsea’s finest have been up to so far.
We’ll start with the bad news. While Antonio Rudiger has been taking part in Germany training, Havertz has missed Die Mannschaft’s last two sessions ahead of their qualifier against Liechtenstein.
The Chelsea forward is reported to be out with a bruised thigh according to Bild but is suspended from Thursday’s match anyway after collecting two yellow cards during the qualifying campaign.
Not the ideal start Tuchel would have hoped for the international break but with no sign of the forward returning to Chelsea just yet, hopefully it is not too serious.
The 22-year-old started the international period with an operation on his infected wisdom teeth and was quickly ruled out of England’s qualifier against Albania.
Whether he is able to join up with the Three Lions in time to face San Marino remains to be seen as his progress is monitored in the build up to the clash. Gareth Southgate has not ruled the midfielder out of the entire camp but his involvement appears limited at best.
Mount of course posted a video in the aftermath of having his teeth removed, when he is clearly still suffering from the effects of anaesthetic. You can watch the video at the top of this story.
Ben Chilwell and Reece James both met up with the squad at St George’s Park on Monday.
No time off
Ross Barkley, Trevoh Chalobah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have all kept busy despite being handed a break by Tuchel.
The Blues boss hopes that his squad can recharge ahead of a hectic winter schedule, but he’s sure to be impressed by their efforts.
He said: “Looking at the fixtures in December and January, it is a lot.
“[Club] The World Cup is coming and other international breaks so we decided here for the staff to give one week off, completely, to give everybody the chance to recover mentally and recharge the batteries.
“December will be tough, January will be tough and it will continue like this. No more breaks and we want to push the team to the limit so that is why we use the time now, after the game [Burnley] to rest.”
However, Barkley travelled to the NAS Sports complex in Dubai and has been firmly in training mode to maintain his fitness and ball skills.
Chalobah and Loftus-Cheek have both been maintaing their fitness through strength and conditioning coach James Ralph, with both being recorded in the gym in the opening days of the international break.
Andreas Christensen contract
Christensenprovided an update on his current thoughts about his Chelsea future and hopes the situation will be clarified ‘soon’.
football.london understands that Chelsea and Christensen were close to an agreement over a new deal in August, but talks have since stalled with no progress made between the defender’s representatives and the club over the final details.
The Denmark international said he felt ‘valued’ by the club despite reports of unhappiness over his salary compard to his standing at the club.
When asked about speaking to other clubs come January, Christensen expressed he was perplexed that the situation was perceived as bad for him or the club.
He said: “Again, I have no idea about it at all. I enjoy playing football and I do not feel that there is any pressure or anything. I just enjoy it.
“I do not know why everyone thinks it is a bad situation. Nobody has said it’s bad, yes. [For] Both sides. Because I’m still happy and I enjoy playing football.”
Romelu Lukaku progress
Lukaku was in Cobham on Sunday training as he aims to recover from his ankle injury and Tuchel plans to be able to give a more concrete update on his progress next week.
The 48-year-old coach said: “We will use the time, of course, and see what is going on in the second week of the national break.
“If you ask me the question then I can be more precise than now. We have that break and we will use it. He will have treatment every day, the same for Timo and Mateo, to bring them on the pitch as soon as possible.”
However, Lukaku has already began to tease his followers with a cryptic tweet that seems to suggest his return could be soon.
Jorginho had had quite the 12 months with Champions League success for the Blues and lifting the EURO 2020 trophy in Italy colours over the summer. It’s no wonder he looks happy in the Azzurri training camp as they prepare for matches against Switzerland and Northern Ireland.
The Chelsea star seems to be sharing a room with a teammate he will be very familiar with in Emerson Palmieri on this outing.
The fullback is currently on loan at Lyon from Stamford Bridge and played 14 times for the French club and produced a goal and an assist in Ligue 1.
Nevertheless when reunited with Chelsea’s midfield maestro, Emerson could not help but become a victim of Jorginho’s torment. The former Napoli star targeted his sleepy friend by zooming in on his face as he yawned and posting it to his Instagram story.
